Its time to get arty!
Hitchin BID, Rhythms of the World and Pots of Arts launch art competition
A collaborative art competition has been launched to transform the disused public toilet block on Bancroft in Hitchin.
Hitchin BID, Rhythms of the World and Pots of Art are asking local people to submit circular designs based on the theme ‘What does Hitchin mean to you”. The 12 winning designs will then be painted onto large durable boards which will be fixed to the front of the toilet block on Bancroft to create a vibrant centrepiece on one of Hitchin’s main thoroughfares. The main circle in the centre of the board will feature the Rhythms of the World ‘dancing man’ logo.
Hitchin Town Centre Manager, Keith Hoskins said: ‘This is a great way to brighten up a building which is currently an eyesore for people visiting the town centre. A number of discussions are underway about the future of this building but, in the meantime, this will be a fantastic, colourful alternative”.
Liz Marfleet, a volunteer for Rhythms of the World who is a member of the project’s organising committee said:”We’re really delighted to be involved. As well as promoting world music, one of the aims of Rhythms of the World is to work with the local community and showcase the talent that we have here on our doorstep. This project will definitely achieve that!”
George Georgiou from Pots of Art on Bancroft said: “This is a great way to get more people actively involved in art and we hope the competition will encourage entries from schools and art colleges as well as practicing artists. Rhythms of the World means a lot to people in Hitchin and it makes sense for them to feature in the centre of the design”.
Whilst the project has already received some financial support, organisers are still seeking cash donations from local companies and in kind donations such as paint and other materials. If your company can help, please contact Liz at liz.marfleet@ntlworld.com. The deadline for entries is 5pm on 23 May 2011. For full terms and conditions visit www.rotw.org.uk.
