Thieves rumbled!
On Monday morning, 14th March 2011, Sainsbury’s store in Bancroft, Hitchin reported a male attempting to steal a bottle of Champagne, when spotted he put the bottle back and left the store. But a keen shop assistant followed this male giving out a good description over the radio link, along with his location. It transpired that this male had stolen two bottles of champagne earlier that day. CCTV picked up the call and followed the male along Bancroft and into the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle which travelled towards Hermitage Road. He then got out of the car and promptly went into the Wilkinson’s store where a Town Ranger followed him as he was then out of sight of the CCTV. The ranger observed the man placing pens in his pocket but as he was leaving he dropped the pens in another part of the store and waited by the cash desk. Sainsbury’s had already contacted the Police and they were quickly on the scene and arrested the offender who is believed to have come from North London. The driver of the car was also picked up in Bancroft near the junction with Portmill lane by the Police, as they had also followed the vehicle and driver around town by CCTV.
The Champagne was recovered from the vehicle and it is understood that one of them is wanted for several other thefts.
Well done to Sainsbury’s staff, CCTV, Town Rangers and the Police for linking everything up!!!!!
